Holistic Approach Dentistry Kawana, Sunshine Coast

At Lake View Dental, we like to take a holistic approach to dentistry.

Our focus is not just on your oral health but also the connection to your general health and well-being.

Like the ‘bone’ song that you learn as a child (the foot bone is connected to the ankle bone etc.), everything in your body is interconnected. This is also, if not more relevant to your oral health. Like everything else, your oral health can have an affect on their overall health and vice versa.

As a holistic dental practice, at Lake View Dental, we not only focus on your teeth and gums, we focus on you as a whole.

What does this mean at Lake View Dental?

Holistic has come to mean a lot of different things to different people, which varies according to their perspective. For this reason, stating that you are treating in a holistic way needs to be defined within the parameters of how you personally think about it.

The dictionary definition of holistic is to treat the body as a some of parts all together and not just the parts in isolation. It is characterised by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of a disease.

We think that medicine by merit of its vastness has become very compartmented, and the narrower the focus the narrower the outcome. We want to look at our patients as a whole and incorporate your social and mental information as well as other disciplines to get a complete outcome.

We believe in the motto Eat Well, Breathe Well, Live Well. To accomplish this we look at dental issues but also so much more.

Dr Ian Odendaal

Our holistic dentistry partners

For this reason we work with other medical professionals, including Hygienists, Chiropractors, Doctors, Physiotherapists, ENT’s, Speech Therapists, Naturopaths, Nutritionists,  Kinesiologists, Osetopaths and all the other specialists we think you would need.

We are growing our network to incorporate as many of these professional disciplines to correctly diagnose and treat every patient’s unique case. As well as expand on our referral panel.

As part of our responsibility as dental professionals, we work to help patients reduce toxins in their body where possible. As such, we only use BPA free white fillings and choose dental materials with as little impact as possible on your body.

What will Dr Ian examine in my consultation?

In comparison to traditional dentistry methods, at Lake View Dental, we approach alternative methods to treat particular issues with your oral health.

When you come in for your initial consultation at Lake View Dental, we will start by examining your posture, the way you breathe and ask you questions about your sleeping and eating habits.  What you may not have previously considered is how all of these aspects are having an effect on your oral health.

Things that holistic dentistry can treat

Holistic dentistry can help you with a range of common dental issues including:

  • TMJ
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Assist in your child’s jaw development
  • An overcrowded mouth (to avoid tooth removal)
  • Misaligned or crooked teeth

Forward dental orthopaedics

Our resident dentist, Dr Ian Odendaal, is very passionate about offering all of his patients’ alternative methods of dental treatment. One of his particular areas of interest is in forward dental orthopaedics. If you have been considering orthodontic treatment for yourself or your child, this could be an area of particular interest to you.

Orthodontic treatment aims to improve the alignment of your teeth. Differing from this, forward dental orthopaedics is when we try to find the reason behind your crooked teeth. To find out more, watch Dr Ian’s video below.

Holistic Dentistry FAQs

Holistic dentistry promotes health and prevention, rather than just focusing on your dental treatment. It is a more mindful way of approaching dentistry. As a holistic practice, we recognise that the whole body is connected and aim to treat YOU not just your teeth and mouth.

While there have been claims, there is no real evidence that show that dental decay, once established, can be reversed by consuming certain foods or supplements.

A nutrient rich diet will help to prevent dental decay however, if you already have a cavity, we recommend that you book an appointment with a dentist, so it can be properly treated.

Although we cannot speak for other practices, at Lake View Dental your treatment options and costs will be similar to those of any other standard dentist. To accommodate our patients, we also offer a range of payment options to suit most budgets and lifestyles.
